How to learn and teach a language in a playful way?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>(English below)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On teada-tuntud t\u00f5de, et \u00fcks parimaid viise <strong>(uut) keelt omandada<\/strong>, on seda teha loomulikus keskkonnas, aktiivselt, <strong>m\u00e4nguliselt<\/strong>, korra \u00f5pitut \u00fcha uuesti ja uuesti m\u00e4lust v\u00e4lja otsides ja rakendades. Mina olen m\u00f5lemat \u2013 nii keele\u00f5petaja kui lapsevanem \u2013 ja m\u00f5istan seda k\u00f5ike poolelt s\u00f5nalt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kuidas t\u00e4pselt see m\u00e4nguline keele\u00f5pe siis ikkagi k\u00e4ib?<\/strong> Alustame sellest, et lihtsalt.. m\u00e4ngida. M\u00e4ngida selles keeles, mida soovitakse \u00f5petada\/\u00f5ppida. Ka m\u00f5iste \u201cm\u00e4ngima\u201d on suur ja lai ning t\u00e4hendab eri vanuses ja eri huvidega inimestele erinevaid asju, aga toon siia \u00fche kitsa n\u00e4ite. Memoriini m\u00e4ng. Neid leidub igasuguseid \u2013 lihtsamaid, keerulisemaid, k\u00f5ikv\u00f5imalike teemade ja kujundustega. Juba kolmeaastastele on olemas memoriine, kuigi, olgem ausad, m\u00e4ngureeglid neile veel ilmselt eriti ei s\u00fcmpatiseeri. Enamasti leiutavad nad kaartidega hoopis iseendale parasjagu sobivaid m\u00e4nge. Sellest pole aga midagi. Keele\u00f5ppe seisukohast pole m\u00e4ngureeglitel mingit t\u00e4htsust. <strong>Oluline on, et laps n\u00e4eks korduvalt pilti (kontekst) ja kuuleks sellele vastavat s\u00f5na, heal juhul kordaks s\u00f5nu ja ideaalis tuletaks neid m\u00e4lust ka ise.<\/strong> Nii toimubki \u00f5ppimine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minu vanem laps on kolmeaastane ja r\u00e4\u00e4gib eesti ja itaalia keelt. Meil oli kodus loomade teemaline memoriin 12 loomaga, mis muutus talle keele\u00f5ppe seisukohast kiiresti igavaks. \u00d5igupoolest tunneb ta juba enamike loomade nimetusi, oravast kapibaarani v\u00e4lja. Talle lihtsalt v\u00e4ga meeldivad loomad. Tegin siis talle ise loomade teemalisi memoriine koduloomade, metsloomade ja eksootiliste loomadega. Aga mis tuli v\u00e4lja \u2013 lapsest isegi suuremas m\u00e4ngutuhinas oli \u00fchel hetkel eesti vanaisa, kes teisest toast kilgete ja kisa peale kohale tuli ja sai l\u00f5puks ometi j\u00f5ukohase v\u00f5imaluse nullist itaalia keelt \u00f5ppida. Varsti m\u00e4ngisid p\u00f5randal koduloomade memoriini vanaisa, t\u00e4di, isa ja muidugi ka laps ise. Segamini kostusid eesti- ja itaaliakeelsed loomanimetused. M\u00e4ngijatele toeks tegin itaalia- ja eestikeelsed spikrid, mida huvi korral m\u00e4ngu ajal uudistada. Isa on lapse k\u00f5rvalt k\u00fcll enamike loomade nimetused n\u00f6 jooksu pealt selgeks \u00f5ppinud, aga midagi uut leiab alati. V\u00f5\u00f5rkeel ei saa kunagi l\u00f5puni \u201cselgeks\u201d, ka mitte emakeel. M\u00e4ngulusti see ei v\u00e4hendanud. Tootefotode jaoks printisin hiljem ka terve printeriga ilusad kaardid ja lamineerisin \u00e4ra. Nii p\u00fcsivad need kaua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mida siit k\u00f5rva taha panna?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>M\u00e4nguline keele\u00f5pe sobib igas vanuses \u00f5ppijale.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Memoriini saavad koos m\u00e4ngida erineva keeletasemega \u00f5ppurid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>M\u00e4ngureeglid pole keele\u00f5ppe seisukohast olulised. K\u00fcll aga v\u00f5ib kord vajalik olla suuremas seltskonnas (nt koolis) m\u00e4ngides, et kaost v\u00e4ltida.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>M\u00e4ngijaid t\u00f5en\u00e4oliselt ei huvita, kui koledalt su printer prindib v\u00f5i kui viltune on l\u00f5ikejoon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oluline on s\u00f5nade kuulmine, v\u00e4lja \u00fctlemine, m\u00e4lust tuletamine ja kordus, kordus, kordus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kuidas memoriini m\u00e4ngida?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Memoriin on m\u00e4lum\u00e4ng, mille eesm\u00e4rk on leida k\u00f5ik \u00fchesugused kaardipaarid. Kaardid segatakse ja asetatakse lauale pildiga allapoole. M\u00e4ng l\u00f5peb siis, kui k\u00f5ik paarid on leitud, ja v\u00f5idab see, kellel on k\u00f5ige rohkem paare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keele\u00f5ppe seisukohast on oluline:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1) nimetada iga looma mitu korda ja iga kord, kui selle kujutis ilmub;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2) m\u00e4ngu kommenteerida, nt \u201cMa valin selle kaardi. Ma keeran selle \u00fcmber. Ma arvan, et kass oli seal. Oi, ei olnudki! Kus ta siis oli? \u00c4kki seal.\u201d jms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3) Samuti korduvad loomulikult fraasid, nagu \u201cSinu kord!\u201d, \u201cKeera \u00fcmber!\u201d, \u201cVaata, mis seal on!\u201d jne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00e4ngu v\u00f5ib m\u00e4ngida nii, et \u00fcks kord toimub m\u00e4ng eesti keeles ja teine kord itaalia keeles. See v\u00f5ib tekitada ka ebav\u00f5rdsetest stardipositsioonidest tingitud frustratsiooni ja sundi. Sund ei ole keele\u00f5ppes kuigi hea asi, eriti mitmekeelsete laste puhul. See ei ole soodus pinnas \u00f5ppimisele \u00fcldiselt ning v\u00f5ib tekitada \u00f5pitava keele vastu hoopis trotsi. Mina laseksin lihtsalt keeltel omasoodu p\u00f5imuda ja ise salaja kaasa aidata, nt kui laps nimetab looma ainult itaalia keeles, lisada ise m\u00e4rkamatult ka eestikeelne nimetus ja sisse pikkida ka m\u00f5ned grammatilised konstruktsioonid, nt \u201cJaa, see on koer! Sul on kaks koera! Easy to say, but somewhat harder to put into practice, especially in a school setting. As teachers, we are often held back from experimenting by tight schedules, exam formats, our own habitual patterns and experiences of how we once learned languages ourselves, insecurity, or simply exhaustion. As parents working in other fields, we may not have\u2014or need to have\u2014sufficient knowledge of pedagogy and the language acquisition process. We most certainly lack time, and therefore cannot delve deeply into everything. I am both\u2014a language teacher and a parent\u2014and I understand all of this perfectly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>So how does playful language learning actually work?<\/strong> Let\u2019s start with simply\u2026 playing. Playing in the language that is being taught or learned. The concept of \u201cplaying\u201d itself is broad and means different things to people of different ages and interests, but here I\u2019ll give one narrow example: the memory card game. There are all kinds of memory games\u2014simpler ones, more complex ones, with all sorts of themes and designs. There are memory games even for three-year-olds, although, let\u2019s be honest, the rules of the game probably don\u2019t appeal to them very much yet. More often than not, they invent their own games with the cards that suit them at the moment. But that doesn\u2019t matter at all. From a language-learning perspective, the rules of the game are irrelevant. <strong>What matters is that the child repeatedly sees the picture (context) and hears the corresponding word, ideally repeats the words, and in the best case also retrieves them independently from memory.<\/strong> That is how learning happens.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>My older child is three years old and speaks Estonian and Italian. We had an animal-themed memory game at home with 12 animals, which quickly became boring for him from a language-learning perspective. In fact, he already knows the names of most animals, from squirrels to capybaras. He simply loves animals. So I made animal-themed memory games myself\u2014with domestic animals, wild animals, and exotic animals. But here\u2019s what happened: at one point, even more enthusiastic than the child himself was the Estonian grandfather, who came in from the other room after hearing squeals and excitement and finally got a manageable opportunity to start learning Italian from scratch. Soon, the memory game with domestic animals was being played on the floor by the grandfather, aunt, father, and of course the child himself. Estonian and Italian animal names were heard mixed together. To support the players, I made Italian\u2013Estonian cheat sheets that could be consulted during the game if needed. The father has picked up most of the animal names \u201con the fly\u201d while playing with the child, but there is always something new to discover. A foreign language can never be completely \u201cmastered\u201d\u2014not even one\u2019s native language. And recalling foreign-language words in the heat of the game is quite different from knowing them in a calm setting.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The memory game itself was nothing particularly fancy\u2014I printed it on thin paper using a printer with broken cartridges that left streaks, and hurriedly cut out quite imperfect squares because the little player was impatiently waiting nearby. This did not reduce the joy of playing at all. Later, for product photos, I printed nice cards with a proper printer and laminated them. That way they will last a long time.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/bestonian.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_1428-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-882\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestonian.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_1428-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bestonian.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_1428-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bestonian.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_1428-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bestonian.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_1428-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/bestonian.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_1428-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/bestonian.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_1428-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/bestonian.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_1428-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What should we take away from this?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Playful language learning is suitable for learners of all ages.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Memory games can be played together by learners with different language levels.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Game rules are not important from a language-learning perspective\u2014although some structure may be necessary in larger groups (e.g. at school) to avoid chaos.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Players probably don\u2019t care how ugly your printer prints or how crooked the cutting lines are.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What matters is hearing the words, saying them aloud, retrieving them from memory, and repetition, repetition, repetition.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>How to play memory?<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Memory is a matching game in which the goal is to find all identical pairs of cards. The cards are shuffled and placed face down on the table. Players take turns turning over two cards\u2014if the pictures match, the player keeps the pair and may take another turn; if they do not match, the cards are turned back over and the turn passes to the next player. The game ends when all pairs have been found, and the winner is the player with the most pairs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>From a language-learning perspective, it is important to:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>name each animal several times and every time its image appears;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>comment on the game, for example: \u201cMa valin selle kaardi. Ma keeran selle \u00fcmber. Ma arvan, et kass oli seal. Oi, ei olnudki! Kus ta siis oli? \u00c4kki seal.\u201d etc.;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>naturally repeat phrases such as \u201cSinu kord!\u201d, \u201cKeera \u00fcmber!\u201d, \u201cVaata, mis seal on!\u201d, and so on.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The game can be played so that one round is in Estonian and the next in Italian. However, this may create frustration and pressure due to unequal starting positions. Pressure is not a very good thing in language learning, especially with multilingual children. It is not fertile ground for learning in general and may even lead to resistance toward the target language. I would simply let the languages blend naturally and subtly support the process myself\u2014for example, if the child names an animal only in Italian, I would unobtrusively add the Estonian name as well and weave in a few grammatical constructions, such as: \u201cJaa, see on koer! Sul on kaks koera!
